Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is an ancient healing art used in China to restore, maintain and improve health. Its origins in China stretch back as far as 100,000 years ago. There are 3 main treatment methods used in TCM: acupuncture, moxibustion and herbs.
Acupuncture in the early period involved the use of stone needles termed 'bian' for applying pressure, and puncturing the skin at specific points on the body to produce profound therapeutic effects. Today we use extremely fine sterile needles made of stainless steel.
Moxibustion consists of burning herbs such as mugwort which are refined into a wool like material. This material is then burned to infuse heat into specific sites on the body to produce therapeutic effects.
Herbal medicine in China consists of using plant and animal materials which are taken internally to help induce a healing response in the body.
