What is Chi? How does acupuncture influence it?

Chi or Qi in simple terms is a person's energy, their life force.

The man in the photo is practising Tai Chi - he is drawing in Chi from the natural environment and moving it around his body with concentration and specific movements.

What does Chi do? It promotes every aspect of health and vitality in the body and it removes toxins and waste products. Chi is not visible - although it can be experienced and harnessed with a little training. It flows through the many channels or meridians of the body - reaching every organ system.

Chi is not only in the body - but in the surrounding environment and our food. It is particularly abundant in natural places such as mountains, forests and by free flowing water such as rivers and waterfalls. This is why eating raw or fresh food and walking in nature can be so invigorating and rejuvenating.

In order to be healthy you need 2 things: 1) Enough chi in the body 2) Free movement or flow of your chi

A deficiency of chi will lead to premature aging, tiredness, weakness and low mood. Stagnation of chi (no movement of energy around the body) will lead to all manner of disease, aches and pains, depending on where in the body the stagnation is.

Acupuncture works by manipulating a person's chi:

> by strengthening it

> by removing stagnation

> allowing it to flow freely around the body

Many acupuncturists, including myself do daily energy work e.g. Tai Chi to strengthen their Chi and even allow them to direct the flow of chi through specific channels as they treat their clients.
