Chinese Cupping - What's it all about?

We've all seen the photos of celebrities and sportspeople with red circles on their backs after having cupping - why do they put their bodies through this? Does this happen to everyone who has cupping?

Cupping is a therapy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to remove toxins from the body. The practitioner waves a flame inside a glass cup to create a vacuum and then places the cup on the skin. The effect is mild suction of the skin inside the cup.

The client can choose how long the cups are left in place - from a few seconds to 10 or 15 minutes. The longer the cups are left, the darker the marks left on the skin. You may be relieved to know that it is easy to achieve an effective cupping treatment without causing any marks whatsoever.

The cups are typically placed in two rows along each side of the spine, correlating with the bladder channel/meridians. This location is ideal for shifting stagnation in the body as a whole to improve general health, relieve fatigue and back pain and prevent emotional exhaustion and stress... who wouldn't fancy that?!

At Acupuncture TCM we offer cupping as a treatment all on its own, or in addition to massage or acupuncture, depending on the client's preference and symptoms.
